I am sick and tired of this belief that visual creatives should just simply
“be glad to be working”
It’s held by a significant number of the commissioning public and It provides them this sick sense of justification for their lowballing antics.
I’m not here for it!

Last night I got caught up in a back & forth on here with someone who claimed to be advising creatives about how not to undersell themselves by providing quotes instead of asking for a client’s budget. Yet when I pointed out the folly in this on both client and creative’s side…
…they doubled down telling me that asking for the budget makes no sense.
What makes no sense is NOT having a budget when you want artwork done.
What DOES’NT inspire trust is not being transparent when asked about your budget.

This is and should always be a MAJOR RED FLAG!
And then she went on to compare commissioning artwork to hiring a painter to paint a room.
What the actual fuck?!

In this day and age of internet access there is no excuse not to have an idea of how much something you want might cost, and even if you don’t have an idea, you being “funny” when asked what your budget is just screams exploitative.
If you’re afraid that the creative will take advantage when you reveal your budget, then you really don’t have to accept their quote until you’ve shopped around.
