THREAD. Absolutely agree with @RealGeoffBarton here. Those centres who over-inflated grades? Deal with them. It will be obvious who they are. Don’t let the vast majority lose out because of the behaviour of a few. 1/9 https://twitter.com/scrlnshare/status/1294923763327422465
I feel very strongly about this. If you look at our school’s outcomes you’ll see modest, realistic improvement based on the actual cohort’s efforts in a school which is demonstrably different to previous years. 2/9
You can also scrutinise our process. We have it all evidenced. Every step of it recorded. We can prove categorically that we have not over-inflated grades. Can all schools do that? I think individual centres should be scrutinised - and held to account for trying to game this. 3/9
The algorithm is just like a teacher giving a whole class detention - I love that analogy @RealGeoffBarton!

I felt this back in March/April and I feel it now. @ASCL_UK made it clear it was not appropriate to take a punt on higher grades. And yet that is what has happened. In a system where we’ve tried so hard to stop the potential for gaming - it’s still happening. 5/9
And that’s during a pandemic! Yes it’s a result of high stakes accountability but school/MAT leaders MUST behave ethically, or we all lose out. It takes courage to be ethical when there’s a lot to lose, but we’ve got to support each other to be brave in the face of pressure. 6/9
I think a centre-by-centre scrutiny is needed. I know the whole thing has been a shambles from start to finish, but as a HT myself in a very high stakes situation there is NOTHING that could have persuaded me to over-inflate grades. 7/9
Year on year stability in itself isn’t what I object to. I get that. It’s that the algorithm doesn’t account for the variable and frankly dubious ethics on display in some schools. And if we do revert to CAGs, I’ll be mad. Because if we do.. the unethical schools benefit. 8/9
How can we move towards a fair and equitable system where gaming doesn’t happen, if being unethical is rewarded?
@RealGeoffBarton’s words really resonated with me this morning. This is our system. We have to be collectively better. 9/9
