This man, Jonathan Taylor, who is he and why are we deeply concerned about his arrest in #Croatia on charges lodged by #Monaco, and why we are calling for his immediate release. Read thread 1/9 #MediaFreedomRR #JournalismIsNotACrime.

In 2014, Taylor blew the whistle on a $275 million international network of bribes paid by his former employer, oil platform company SBM Offshore. It provided investigators in #UK #Brazil & #Netherlands with evidence & SBM Offshore was fined over $800 million.2/9 #Whistleblowers
In that same year, 2014, SBM Offshore lodged a criminal complaint in #Monaco against Taylor & a year later, initiated defamation proceedings against him in the #Netherlands following an interview he gave. They demanded a retraction & damages. #SLAPP #JournalismIsNotACrime. 3/9
Their claim failed. But can you see through their actions? They were misusing legal mechanisms to #intimidate and #silence Taylor for speaking out in the public interest. This is called a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP). 4/9 #SLAPP #JournalismIsNotACrime
This is what is stated in the #EU #Whistleblowing directive: “providing effective protection to whistleblowers from retaliation increases legal certainty for potential whistleblowers and thereby encourages whistleblowing also through the media.” 6/9 #JournalismIsNotACrime
On 31 July 2020, Taylor was arrested and detained at Dubrovnik Airport in #Croatia as he arrived for a holiday with his wife & 3 children on charges of “bribery and corruption” lodged by #Monaco. Did #Croatia fail to follow the EU directive? 7/9 #Whistleblowers #PressFreedom
On 3rd August 2020, Taylor was released on bail, but he has to remain in #Croatia, with the threat of pending legal action hanging over his head. We ask, why should he be treated like a common criminal for exposing #corruption? 8/9 #JournalismIsNotACrime
