#Ederson is undoubtably a top sweeper & his intercepting skills often prevent #ManchesterCity from conceded more shots however once he cannot get to the ball first his decison making is woeful & costs #MCFC goals. The first 2 goals vs #Lyon yesterday were classic examples.

#UCL
1st goal: the moment the striker gets to the ball #Ederson is ~14yrds from his line. He knows the striker has the ball under control & he easily has time to back pedal back to his line but instead he chooses not to & remains high.

#UCL
The ball then falls back to #Cornet & it is now that #Ederson decides to back pedal. This is way too late & means he only gets back a little way.

In fact he moved only ~4yrds in ~3 sec!

He’s so far out of position that he allows an average shot from ~24yrd to beat him.
2nd goal: #City play a really high line therefore #Ederson needs a high starting position but again in this scenario it is obvious that #Dembele has the ball under control & #Ederson cannot win it. But again he doesn’t retreat he stays high & way out of position!

#UCL
This goal is worse as not only is the shot from ~24yrds it is weak & central but again his poor positioning means the shot squirms under him & into the net.

If #Ederson had used the time it took #Dembele to move in on goal to reposition himself there’s no way he concedes.

I wrote a thread on the statistical analysis I have done which shows GKs who try to use the engage & react technique give themselves a far lower probability of making the save than GKs who instead move to a deeper positon & wait and react during 1v1s.

This isn’t a new mistake from #Ederson either it’s crept into his game a lot over the last few years. The examples which spring to mind are in the 2 games vs #Wolves where he again got himself in no mans land & gave himself no chance of making the save due to poor positioning.
3rd goal: For me this isn’t an issue really. It’s just a handling mistake due to a lack of concentration. I would be way more concerned about the first 2 goals as they seem to be a fundamental decision making issues in #Ederson’s game which unchanged will cost #MCFC more goals.
Handling mistakes happen to any GK. & with #Ederson there’s no technical issue with the way he catches when diving & in fact #Ederson usually has handling up there with the best GKs in the world. So this is a mistake that I wouldn’t dwell on too much.
Conclusion: It was a poor night for #Ederson in the #UCL quarter finals which is a recurring theme given his performances vs #Liverpool & #Spurs.

He’s been so good for #MCFC this year so this will be hard to swallow but hopefully he can bounce back & improve next year.
If he’s going to improve he needs to get better at dealing with 1v1s when he knows he can’t get to the ball first.
He’s incredible at beating strikers to the ball & preventing shots which I have highlighted all season, but once that’s not an option he cannot keep a high position.
