There will be angst but with an happy ending, it follows the game's story just from another point of view.
Dedue never really had a choice. He was going to protect his majesty Dimitri. Everywhere. And if he wanted to enter into the Academy he would have followed him into the Academy.
When Lonato, Ashe's adoptive father, told him he could go following his dreams and study to become a knight, Ashe cried. For one week. Every day. Reading over and over all the books that he loved so much.
The first time they eyes met, Dedue thought that someone so small should have a guard too. Dimitri was well bigger and stronger and he had him, why was Ashe alone?
Ashe turned his gaze away, Dedue was like one of the bad guy all the Knights had to fight sooner or later, plus, he was from Duscur. Definitely a big no.
The first time they had to cook together Ashe was shaking, and Dedue noticed. "If you want you can leave. I've cooked for many people before, I can do it now." His voice plain, eyes fixed on the herbs.
Ashe nearly tripped over the chair but shaked his head firmly. "Not at all. I don't want to leave." Then he told himself that if Dedue could cook, he couldn't have been a bad guy. "Do you like flowers?" Luckily enough Dedue liked flowers.
The first time they went to the greenhouse together it was Ashe's idea. Dedue tried to discourage him repeating in a sort of loop that he was from Duscur, that it was wrong to hang out with him but Ashe didn't really care.
"Aren't these one beautiful?" He pointed at a couple of electric green flowers stained by white dots. "They are. They look like you" Dedue answered and Ashe blushed so hard he could barely look at him.
"I can show you the one I've been taking care of lately. I can teach you something." Dedue immediately changed the subject and Ashe immediately nodded thankful. "Duscur has lot of immense flower camps, wish you could see them, Ashe"
The first time their teacher asked them to do a work together, they both nodded without hesitation, smiling at each other. And Dimitri looked petrified because he knew Dedue for a long time, and Dedue never smiled. Ashe knew Dedue for six months now, and saw him smiling a lot.
"I will take care of the horses if you can clean up over there, pretty please?" Ashe usually pulled out the pretty-please card when they cooked and there was some onion involved he didn't want to touch.
"Horses will kick you right in the face, go clean up and I'll take care of them" A over dramatic offended look painted Ashe's face and Dedue laughed. Ashe was happy and didn't know why, Dedue was happy and he thought it was the horses.
The first time that Dedue put himself between a bandit and Ashe to protect him from a flying spear, the boy screamed at the top of his lungs hastily taking his bow shooting an arrow into the enemy's head, perfectly between their eyes. "Dedue, what are you doing?"
He run to him frenetically undressing him from the heavy metal plates he was wearing to check his wound. "Protecting you" He answer dryly, trying to go for a smile but failing. "You don't have to protect me! You have to protect yourself!"
Ashe was vivid and his hands were shaking when Dedue caressed his cheek. "I would never be able to live in a world where I'm alive and you're not." He passed out in his arms, and was brought back to the academy by four Solis' knights. Fortunately enough Manuela was a good healer.
It wasn't the first time cooking together, they have done that for almost a year now, but the first time they had to cook together for the whole Academy Ashe was nervous, and although Dedue tried to hide it, he was too. "We have to do what we always do, just bigger"
Ashe said with a nervous laughter and Dedue nodded, taking all the ingredients needed. "We've done this millions of time, it's our best dish, we can do this blinded Ashe, we're gonna be fine"
Dedue's calm voice always worked with the smaller one and he had to stop and breath slowly to stop his hands. Plus, Dedue grabbed them in his, much bigger, and callous, and darker.
Ashe could do nothing but stare at him, hands in hands. Something twitched in their chest, at the same moment. They took it as the burning motivation to cook, it was something else.
The first time they attended the annual ball, Dimitri had to pray Dedue for ten minutes to have some alone time with their teacher. Ashe on the other hand, had to almost kick Annette in the ass to convince her to go ask Mercedes to dance.
So they ended up both alone, standing in the room, drinking nothing but water. They glanced at eachother a couple of times before walking at the same time outside. "Hi" "Hi" The moon gently illuminated their faces just enough for them to see the other.
"You care to share this dance?" Dedue offered his hand and Ashe took it without even thinking. They were closer than they've ever been an none of them was bothered. Dedue's eyes couldn't move from Ashe's face as they danced, slowly.
In elegant suits instead of the stiff armour movements were easier, and smoother. "Ashe! Ashe!" Annette's voice calling him separated them like a thunderbolt and made him run without looking back.
The last time they saw eachother was on the battlefield. Eldegard's soldiers attacking them from every side, leaving them breathless. Dimitri's rage bigger than ever. "Ashe, there!" Dedue screamed and Ashe's arrow as usual hit perfectly.
Ashe turned around to smile at his guard but three soldiers were already on him. The battle so chaotic they could do nothing but trying to protect each other while fighting to stay alive. Then a dragon appeared on the battlefield and Dimitri rushed.
Dedue looked at him with eyes full of panic. He had to follow him. He tried to seek for Ashe's eyes desperately but the boy was behind Annette protecting her. So Dedue smiled at his back, before running after his majesty.
And Ashe turned around too late, only in time to see the man body small as a pin, far in the distance.
