The increasing of marriageable age for girls is just another jugaad Or Rather, a very simplistic approach at pushing young girls towards higher education and/or employment instead of addressing the main problem of gender inequality.
The issue is of the rights of women to work and become financially independent and the right to get married to anyone, at any stage of life and also the right to divorce. Despite having them on paper, there’s still miles to go when it comes to changing mindsets.
This is what needs to be fixed. What we truly need is serious social re-engineering of the Indian people. No amount of jugaad and gyaan giving on morality can help women achieve what they truly deserve.
There’s absolutely no way of knowing whether a woman could pursue higher education or a job if the marriageable age is increased. There’s a high possibility that even a graduate woman might be FORCED to be a housewife post marriage.
Small time jugaad never work at least when it comes to gender rights. They’re good at winning you intellectual clout and tags of being pro feminist and all but beyond that there’s no actual change on ground.
Having said that, do I oppose this? Absolutely not. It maybe a jugaad but still it’s something better than being in a mediocrity ridden status quo. It’s still a small step forward in the right direction.
But always remember, these jugaads based on few people’s definition of morality will have serious repercussions on the ground. One has to be ready for it.
