The worst thing is that the USPS conspiracy theorists would prefer that postal workers drive around and check empty mail collection boxes, rather than work at the branch and e.g. sort mail.
My mom's branch had 3 postal workers going out and checking collection boxes. But it was a waste of time, given how many boxes were unused. So they pulled collection boxes and had 1 person go out and collect. The other two could help at the branch.
Similar stupidity about the "machines." Before working at the branch, my mom worked the graveyard shift (10pm-6am) at the Oakland processing facility for 7 years. Machines were often outdated and routinely replaced/repaired/discarded.
