Panch Prayag signifies 5 sacred river confluences wherein different rivers emerging from Himalayas meet each other before forming Ganga
Bathing in holy prayag water is revered as a way to cleanse human soul & assured path to moksha/heaven

Panch Prayags are:
1. Vishnuprayag
2. Nandaprayag
3. Karnaprayag
4. Rudraprayag
5. Devprayag
(in descending flow sequence)
Panch Prayag destinations follow the route created by the Alaknanda river that emerges from Himalaya’s Satopanth glacier.
1. Vishnuprayag:
35 km downstream from Badrinath, where River Alaknanda joins Dhauliganga. Besides having immense religious significance, Vishnuprayag is also popular for trekking and hiking that includes Valley of Flowers, Kagbhusandi Lake & Hemkund Lake as well

2. Nandaprayag:
Second in line where Alaknanda meets River Nandakini. Legend has it that a king named Nanda once performed yagnya here seek gods blessings. Another popular legend says that the confluence derives its name from foster father of Lord Krishna, Nanda

3. Karnaprayag:
Here Alaknanda joins River Pindar originating from Pindar Glacier from the Nanda Devi mountain 
range. As per Mahabharata, Karna practiced penance here & at this place his father, the Sun God, blessed him with indestructible gear, namely kavacha & kundala

4. Rudraprayag:
River Alaknanda meets Mandakini here. The name Rudra as it is believed that god Shiva had performed rudra tandav (fierce form) here. Also there is a belief that god Shiva played rudra veena at this place. Two popular temples here are Rudranath & Chamunda

5. Devprayag:
Last holy confluence of river Alaknanda & Bhagirathi which originates from one of the glaciers of Gangotri. This is the first confluence you meet on way to Badrinath. Devprayag is holy gateway to Chardham (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath & Badrinath)
