I would argue that there are profound differences between Thomas Jefferson and David French
Jefferson was an Enlightenment era liberal. No one would ever confuse Jefferson with French even though the latter identifies as a "classical liberal" or conservative liberal
There are a number of striking differences. Jefferson, for example, wrote at length about racial differences. He presided over a "White Man's Country." He endorsed racial separatism. He was an ethnic Anglo-American who took pride in his Anglo-Saxon roots
In Jefferson's mind, the rights and liberties of Americans were not only natural rights, but part of their English heritage. Jefferson was fond of attributing American liberty to the Anglo-Saxons. This was the status quo which prevailed down until the 1930s
In contrast, David French is a deracinated, emasculated, grandstanding individualist. He is a "cuckservative." Although he is an evangelical Protestant, his evangelicalism is utterly foreign to 19th century Kentucky or Tennessee
What changed? It is like some great force has made French and others like him into a sentimental, preening little bitch whose worldview is defined by abstractions. Stripped him of race, masculinity, virility.
Is "classical liberalism" to blame for this? French would likely say that "classical liberalism" entails being desexed and deracinated. Was there anyone back then who was anything like David French?
Are there any "classical liberals" who remind you of David French? Voltaire was witty and is still fun to read. He wasn't deracinated or desexed like French
David French is a product of a world that represses White ethnicity and masculinity. That's not really "classical liberalism." It is peculiar to the 20th century
French speaks the language of a 21st century American upper middle class evangelical Protestant. Again, it is very peculiar and is not really "classical liberalism"
It is fashionable now for liberals to disdain ethnicity and masculinity which was utterly foreign to "classical liberalism"
