In child protection, notifications of alleged child abuse/neglect increase w/ remoteness & increase w/ socioeconomic status (SES).

The more remote u live, the lower ur SES, the higher the chances of child protection involvement in ur life.

Is this an attack on poverty?
There is a difference between deliberately withholding food or shelter & being unable to provide because u don’t have access to those material resources.

Governments need to ⬆️ family support investment. Poverty, housing, some families need ⬆️ financial support @fam_matters_au
It’s an example of classism & how white, middle-class values & norms around parenting are upheld as the ideal.

If ur parenting differs from this white, middle-class ideal, u r targeted by child protection. Ur parenting doesn’t accord w/ the standard that child protection wants.
Indigenous parenting/family are diverse & doesnt always fit w white, middle-class ideals of family & parenting.

We have big mobs who share parenting. Our idea of family is broad.

Since invasion, Indigenous ways of living, family & parenting have been attacked & it hasnt stopped
Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT sexual abuse that is the main reason Indigenous kids enter care.

Neglect and emotional abuse are the most substantiated types of abuse for Indigenous kids.

And the number 1 reporters about this abuse? Police. Number 2 reporters? Schools.
