I visited Gettysburg yesterday with expert extraordinare, Bob Bowser from the @DrMuddHouse. Along with seeing the battlefield, we ended up going on a search for rock carvings. It all started when we accidentally found one while at the summit of Big Round Top. 1/
The rock had the name “J. Hinchliff” carved into it and was very easy to be seen with the naked eye even though the picture makes it hard to make out. It was carved in very deep. 2/
Intrigued, we started googling other known rock carvings at Gettysburg. We found this carving of “4th ME” near the 4th Maine monument near Devil’s Den. 3/
On top of Devil’s Den we found a few name carvings of “J. Tipton”, “J. F. Craft”, and “John”. 4/
A rock right next the monument for the 40th NY has a carving on it that says “40th NY Vols” and their diamond corps insignia. In my picture only the diamond is easy to make out. 5/
Above Devil’s Den is a well known and deep carving of the name “P. Noel” 6/
This rock, located near a field and tree line on the Weikert Farm says “DA 140 PV”. It marks the place where Captain David Acheson of the 140th Pennsylvania Volunteers was originally buried after his death on July 2, 1863. 7/
But the coolest carvings we found were on Flag Rock. It took us awhile to find the right rock and, at first, we couldn’t see the eponymous flag but then the setting sun peeked through the clouds and illuminated it. It was really cool! 8/8
