Old memories
This is the first strip till rig I ever bought/built in 2001, photo I believe is from winter 2003, so this was like v2.0
Still to this day the best strip till rig I ever ran.
Just look at it.
Damn, it used to be fun
No GPS, no rate control, NH3, liquid, markers

Strip till was barely a thing here, one neighbor had started a year before me. Great farm family that always thought ahead. A guy in Guymon had built this prototype version outta stuff laying around, and Bigham Brothers outta Lubbock made an official version using their parts.
This was that machine. I tweeted some things, but the core design was somebody else’s.
Cost me $16,000 new for an 8 row machine.
They would build it if I would buy one.
I know they built some more that year, no clue how many were ever made.
All the fertilizer stuff I did

Nobody told us we couldn’t make it work
Nobody cared much, most were too busy trying to yield and get $3/bu
People watched and questioned, pretty excited when it worked
Everyone talked, shared ideas... wasn’t about who had it first or best, we just wanted a better way

There were all kinds of hot rod strip till rigs, people would build outta old shit, or sometimes they would buy a solid frame and outfit will all premium parts
There were no rules, only an idea and creation
It was cool as fuck looking back on it.
Eventually it worked great

Once the hurdles cleared and people saw results, demand for this equipment spiked and the rest is history
Now a 12 row costs north of $75k (guessing) and that’s just for some cookie cutter bullshit
And I use those too now, because it was easier than building one again

Somewhere along the line it was all about the easy button
We all smashed it.
Sometimes, when shit isn’t easy, it’s fun.
Evening.

Bonus for farm nerds
Could pulll NH3 & liquid trailer
Ran saddle tanks and combined with trailer for liquid capacity, teejet pressure gauge/switch setup
Had to split hydraulics, not enough on 8300 to do everything, Hypro hyd fert pump
Heavy as hell
Like really fucking heavy
