Animation is a perfect storm of indoor kids who don’t know how to stand up for themselves and an industry that doesn’t respect the insane amount of money animation generates for it.
It’s very frustrating to me. Schedules are shortening and expectations are broadening for every position but all we can do is scream about how other artists can help us out by overloading themselves instead of realizing we aren’t the problem
We are one of the only pandemic-proof industries and we are still treated like garbage it’s absolutely amazing
Even the derision I hear from people who are currently unemployed because live action is bunk. You’re eventually gonna decide to try to write for an animated show out of desperation, Mary. You’ll take a job from someone else and suddenly pretend you’ve always respected animation
Our union does its best but it’s working with a major handicap because it has to encompass every position in animation and fight for all the different needs they have....and it’s impossible! Live action has a different union for every position! Amazing!
I DON’T know where I’m going with this. I’m just drinking tequila and scrolling animation Twitter
But eventually we’re all gonna have to start pushing back on schedules from every level instead of just screaming to our therapists and threatening to publish graphic novels (I have done both as recently as this week)
I’m still reeling from the time a studio presented a schedule to us that involved two week board rotations with four week revisionist cleanups. We pushed back and got more time, but when that wasn’t enough and we broke the schedule into a normal rotation over the course of a year
But we had to fail every couple months to get there. The mental distress...all over a budget that apparently existed the entire time...lol I could scream even now
There’s another conversation to be had about lowballing artists (esp if they are minorities...👀) and pretending like prestige makes up for it but I’m just gonna go outside
Also I’m begging y’all to stop liking and retweeting this. Let me go back to making my graphic novel and texting my therapist in peace.
