You know what? Let’s discuss it. https://twitter.com/neonmua/status/1294736721234591745
Dear non-black people (especially Anglo Saxons): it is not your place or privlege to dictate, monitor or gatekeep black outrage. This is not what allies do.
#1: Do not tell black people what or what not to get mad at. This includes (but is not limited to) tagging us in a tweet or IG post involving things such as blatant racism, blackface, black fishing, etc.
I can’t tell you the number of times since Dusk to Dawn was revealed that I was tagged in a brand’s lack-luster shade range. We see it girl. But I, or any other black personality, am not your attack dog.
Which brings me to #2: you shouldn’t wait for a black stamp of approval to call out racism. We as humans can tell right from wrong. You can and should call any form of oppression you see. Just be mindful not to speak for or over black folks when our voices need to be amplified.
#3: Black people are not a monolithic group. We all have different walks of life and therefore differences of opinion. Do not take one black person’s view as a representation of all black people, whether right or wrong. Your friend Paige does not speak for me.
And finally #4: Do not expect a pat on the back for being an ally. You don’t get a gold star or an invite to the cookout for being a good person. Do the right thing BECAUSE it’s the right thing, not because it’s trendy or that it will put you in good graces with us.
One more thing. I said this earlier but I’ll say it again: protecting black people isn’t just about our physically beings. It includes the mental, social, emotional & spiritual as well. There is proof in how slavery affects our mental and emotional being to this day
