I’ve been thinking about the wailing and gnashing that has spiked once more about the Govt’s response to new cases of community transmission.
All the same folks, making all the same arguments, with little logical coherence to their arguments…

“Sweeden!”
“Open the borders”
“They failed to protect us”
“We don’t need protecting!”

As observed the flip flopping between one moment allowing the virus in, and then complaining about the border failures makes no sense - unless you consider who is saying it, and why

In my view it’s as simple as understanding Power.

Those complaining most loudly are outspoken, powerful folk, most with platforms, and most used to being in charge of their own existence.

They hate having to admit the best response is for us all to simply follow orders

And even worse having to “follow orders” - and feel powerless - in response to someone whose politics you disagree with, and even worse follow the orders of a (youth adjacent) woman.

It might be stretching the hypothesis to say we can see the same dynamics operating with NZPP and the other conspiracy theorists - albeit that is a response that rallies those used to feeling power-less
5/n
Similar in that it is understandable distress, channelled into acts and beliefs that lead those who subscribe to them to feel powerful via being in on the special secrets that enable them to feel that way (This isn’t new, it’s an agreed understanding of most conspiracies)

The problem is MORE AUTHORITY won’t work, it will simply increase the resistance.

Arguing and attacking won’t work - it will just reinforce the defensiveness.

Perhaps we need to focus more on the freedom we do have, and the autonomy we all retain, even at Level 3.
