I'm breaking my Twitter fast in honor of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary and the inaugural meeting of the RSPM Bead Club - below will be a number of resources concerning the Blessed Virgin.
The pandemic strangely made a Catholic out of me and one especially focused on Marian devotion. There is a strong tradition of this in my family and its accessibility, openness and applicability to present dire straits touched me very deeply.
The root of Marian devotion in my family is my grandma, whose uncle carved the statue of Mary she is seen with here. She was fond of assembling plastic rosaries such as this one, and was generally a sweet, loving woman.
In the rest of my collection - first communion, olive wood rosary that went with me to India, and my most recent, a Fatima rosary devoted to St. Francisco and Jacinta and the sacred heart of Mary that I found on a desk while working at hospice.
Per @gordon_white, there is major utility in having heart focused practices to help you deal with being alive right now and this is something Mary does exceptionally well. There is strength to be drawn from both the blazing immaculate heart of Mary and the wounded Mater Dolorosa.
(also, semitangential, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is more focused on Christ but makes a nice complement to other rosary practices and is extremely fast and heart centric. Also recommended by Mitch Horowitz!)
In terms of what to pray, accompanying prayers for all of the above can be found with a quick Google search but personally like this version of the rosary itself, especially the Rosary Without Distractions https://www.rosarycenter.org/homepage-2/rosary/how-to-pray-the-rosary/
They give you a nice image to meditate on per Mystery and a sentence to silently read to yourself per bead which actually makes for a nice crash course in Catholicism with a clear focus on the major players and only a touch of the bullshit
If you want to connect with the Sorrowful aspect of Mary, the Servite rosary is a fine direction to turn. https://acatholiclife.blogspot.com/2019/02/how-to-pray-servite-rosary-chaplet.html?m=1
This Rosary replaces the five sets of Mysteries of the primary Rosary with one set of seven Sorrows, and each grouping is of seven beads instead of ten. Note that the Mater Dolorosa/The Sorrowful Mother is often depicted with seven swords at her heart.
I first encountered this chaplet through this blog post where it was adapted to pray on behalf or the Anima Sola/Loneliest Soul in Purgatory. I sought it out because I wanted a way to pray for all the people I had known who had died alone/in pain https://thenowlbetwixt.wordpress.com/2019/07/14/a-chaplet-for-anima-sola-the-lonely-soul/
That particular blog has been extremely helpful in the process of haunting my Catholicism and helping it to accommodate to my occult inclinations and vice versa btw, I recommend it very highly and will quote from it a few more times.
In fact, I'll do it right now. One of the more occulted aspects of Mary, which is mostly apocryphal, is her status as Queen of Hell, in addition to being the Queen of Heaven by turns Queen of Earth. This is a chaplet to that aspect of her. https://thenowlbetwixt.wordpress.com/2019/11/30/infernal-marian-rosary/
Stella Maris/Our Lady, Star of the Sea is a very celestial version of Mary, and also one closely linked to deep waters (obviously). Very helpful when venturing into stormy waves. https://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/ave-maris-stella.html
Mary is also very regional and can be found wearing different faces and performing different miracles (though usually of a healing nature) throughout the world. Some interesting Marian apparitions to investigate are Guadalupe, Fatima, Lourdes and Medjugorje.
These are also good places to order rosaries from online through eBay/Etsy. I don't have any sellers to recommend because all of mine have come through other means but there's a lot of exciting work out there and I am also looking forward to making my own.
Alright, I think that's everything that comes to mind about the practice. Feel free to message me if you have questions. I plan to be off Twitter until the thirtieth but I'll get back to yo. Thanks for reading and be well until we meet again! Mother Mary bless and keep you!
