Hollywood is watching the Canadian box office to see if the Spongebob movie and "Unhinged" can draw audiences on opening weekend.

How's it going so far? Cineplex now reserves seats, so you watch from afar on how many tickets are being sold. Here's what I found:
Keep in mind a few factors:
-Toronto screens have only been open a couple weeks
- These movies are no Tenet. They were never going to rock the b.o.
- Spongebob is at least 14 screens in the core of downtown Toronto, dividing up its audience
- Some sales may not be reflected here
The 3 p.m. showing of "Spongebob: Sponge on the Run" on Saturday at Toronto's Scotiabank Theatre saw roughly six seats sold of 42.

That's about 14% of available seats.

Grey seats = occupied
The 6 p.m. Spongebob showing at Yonge and Dundas had sold six tickets right before showtime, representing about 13% of available seats.
A 3 p.m. screening of Spongebob in Hamilton, about an hour away from Toronto, fared a bit better with roughly 12 seats sold, or 29%.

It's playing on four screens at that location.
A 6:45 screening of "Unhinged" at the Scotiabank Theatre had about five tickets sold at showtime. That's 11% of available seats.
Christopher Nolan might find a silver lining for his new film Tenet. A re-release of Inception is drawing moviegoers with its $5 Imax tickets, effectively selling out at 9:45.

The downside? See those unsold blue seats? Cineplex can't sell them because of distancing measures.
👆🏻This could pose a challenge for movies that appeal to lone moviegoers.

Family films draw a group. Under this distancing sales model, mom can sit with kid #1 and dad with kid #2 (for argument's sake).

When dude #1 goes to Tenet solo, he's locking up two potential ticket sales.
Excuse the typos. I wrote this on my phone as I battled auto fill and the character limit at the same time.
SpongeWatch 2020:

All three key downtown Toronto Cineplex theatres had Saturday 9 pm showings. Here's a tally of tickets sold (percentage of available seats sold) more than five mins after showtime.

Y&D: 2 (4%)
Scotia: 8 (17%)
Varsity: 5 (11%)
Crowe Call:

"Unhinged" had 9:15 p.m. showings. A few minutes after showtime...

Scotia: 5 (11%)
Varsity: 4 (9%)
OK that's enough for tonight. I'm going to go cry now.
