Hi from Sweden! Seeing a lot of NZ to 🇸🇪 #COVID19 comparisons from across the political spectrum on twitter.. why??

Should NZ replicate 🇸🇪? Absolutely not.

But the context is completely different!

Thread... 1/5
Key background: 🇸🇪 winter holidays coincided with the outbreak in the Alps so they received a massive initial dose of cases. Then back in March when it was ‘lockdown season’, yes 🇸🇪 was very different to its neighbours & more open (& had more deaths, esp aged care) 2/5
NZ consists of isolated islands. After a strong response to the initial outbreak there was no community transmission for over 100 days. There is now an outbreak with unknown source, matched with another strong response. Elimination can continue to be a goal for NZ 3/5
There seems to be a lot of comparisons to Sweden as if it’s still March & they’re the outlier. But now most countries in Europe have fairly similar restrictions: physical distancing, max #’s for gatherings (50 here in 🇸🇪), isolation if sick 4/5
There was a distinctive Swedish model in March, but now there is a much more narrow & aligned range of measures across borders. European countries will have to live with this virus for the foreseeable future.

NZ’s context is completely different. Why are we comparing? 5/5
