For #ScholarSunday I want to talk about #OnlineLearning
Yes, it is a pandemic. The world is on fire even if your particular community isn't so let's start with kindness.

Stop making students to turn on video! Volunteer sure. Mandatory NO.
Video is intrusive. It can expose parts of their world they don't show as school.
It is a display of privilege and inequality that has no place or need to influence a student being a great learner

Stop thinking that because they are home they can attend synchronous classes.
Maybe they are home & it isn't safe to view lectures around their family/roommates.
Maybe it isn't a safe environment.
You don't know what they are going through.
Make materials asynchronous
3/n
Stop thinking your colleagues are having it easy.
Many are struggling. Lots of us have suffered loss. There is increased depression and hardship going on.
Default to kindness. To everyone. They deserve it. You deserve it.
Don't think that because people are home they have heaps of free time.
Many people have lost their free few minutes daily because someone is asking for something 24/7. Not just kids. Spouses, family members, bad roommates.
People might be home but most seem to have less time 5/n
When providing feedback be extra thoughtful.
You can be constructive and not hurtful. Find the upside in all things you read, edit, grade, review. Even the worst content got completed in a rough time.

FINALLY: Be kind to yourself.
Be sad or scared if you need to. Nap, shower, binge watch or whatever you need to get to the other side.
This year is a dumpster fire and just being alive is enough.
