The people who tell me to “just read the Bible” or that ”the Bible is really clear about this” obviously didn’t go to seminary 
People think they “just read the Bible” and arrive at their God-given conclusions.
Let’s say that’s true and they aren’t influenced by 2000+ years of theology done by (mostly) white guys.
Even the translation they choose influences their reading.

So really, they need to be reading the Bible in the original Greek and Hebrew.
And even THEN, scholars argue over the meanings of words. Especially words that the writers of the gospel accounts and Paul seem to have just made up.
So no one “just reads the Bible.”

And for the record, this is why a good pastor spends hours working on sermons and Bible studies. Because looking at what commentaries and scholars and people who have spent their whole life doing this work says is... IMPORTANT.
