Today's viewing: Judy Garland singing "The Man That Got Away" in A Star is Born, about eight times. A) Yes, I am, how did you know? B) This is surely one of the best-filmed songs in any Hollywood movie. Maybe Cukor's shrewdest work.
It's one take, and he makes it look so casual, just her singing with "the boys in the band" after hours. But she's always in the center, sometimes surrounded and sometimes in the foreground. And every instrument is pointed at her like an arrow.
There's a famous moment when she rushes forward and the camera loses focus for a second, as if it can't keep up with her. That makes it feel off-the-cuff. But the precision of things like the drummer in the foreground being in complete silhouette with only his hands lit: Perfect.
And as a vocal AND a physical performance, of course, it is hall of fame and yes, she should have won the Oscar, and I know this has all been covered before, but it needs to be re-argued every year for eternity. Okay, as you were.
