#Distancelearning ah-ha's during my morning bicycle ride:

1. Taking roll via Zoom Gallery is frustrating. Pictures are not in alphabetical order. Tap "Participants" to see names. They are in alpha order.

2. If you email parents, use BCC to avoid a parent hitting "Reply All."
3. Call parents to let them know what their child is doing right.

It's not new advice, but I've been thankful I've done this with several students so far for when I had to call to offer some coaching on distance learning behaviors that are more problematic. #Distancelearning
4. I had the privilege to make 4, no-contact deliveries of materials to students' homes. The act of doing that and saying hi from the sidewalk established rapport like never before.

5. Call families to ask if they are okay with a no-contact delivery. #Distancelearning
6. Seek feedback from parents & students after two-weeks of #distancelearning. Names optional. They will appreciate the vulnerability and your willingness to adjust to meet their needs. You will get valuable feedback.

7. Don't take feedback personally. https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/student-feedback/
8. Consider doing your "back to school night" the first morning of school and offer a couple of make up sessions in the evenings of the first week.

I had ¾ of my parents join Monday morning with great questions & they left with smiles.

9. Avoid the temptation to take your students on a tour of your house. Not every child has what you have and having seen this a couple of times, it comes off as a bit "showy," however...

10. Show them something that speaks to who YOU are like...

#distancelearning
11. ...a hobby you love or a prized thing that's not expensive and is maybe a little bit nerdy or common and is unique for you.

I love macrophotography and this coffee cup I got when I was 10-years old.

12. Consider asking your students if they want to share their prized blanket or stuffed animal. My teddy bear and blanket I got when I was a baby made an appearance.

13. Give virtual Zoom high-fives. It's fun.

#distancelearning
16. Have backup plans/activities at the ready if your go-to activity encounters a tech glitch.

17. Tech-glitches and wifi problems will happen.

18. Silent reading is still a valuable tool for all students.

21. ALL WRITTEN FEEDBACK TO STUDENTS IS WORTHLESS...if they don't read it.

Walk students through daily reflections on written feedback of their work.

22. In Google Classroom, remember there is public & private comments you can share. And you HAVE TO press that airplane button
You can follow @Curiosity_Films.
