I’m not even going to bother to address whether or not it is ‘correct’ to twirl inside a mosque. Our problem isn’t just that every asshole wants to police what is & is not ‘Islamic’. Our biggest problem is the speed with which things jump to a death sentence.
I seriously don’t know what can be done to address this. This extremely toxic atmosphere of zero tolerance of any view but your own, & the ability to use the extremely powerful weapon of the blasphemy law to enforce your private fatwa & to settle personal scores has been building
Even our last open military dictator couldn’t amend these laws, which are actually deeply un-Islamic in their form & spirit - the current pusillanimous-yet-fascist dispensation is certainly not going to do anything to curtail this violence.
The scariest thing is that our society has now been so deeply radicalized by these state-sponsored monsters that even if the blasphemy laws were to magically disappear tomorrow, the vigilante violence would continue unabated.
Social media has provided them with an extremely effective way to mobilize & further radicalize mainstream sunni public opinion in Pakistan.
I’m very scared for Saba Qamar & her co-star, but I also want to remind everyone that the past few months have seen an unprecedented- even for Pakistan - uptick in the harassment & murder of Ahmedi Muslims.
Nobody is safe.
