a thread of why the man is such an important song to me
growing up, i was always told different things by every one around solely because i am a girl. “you must act this way” or “you must do this not this” are just some of the things i heard.
i knew i always wanted to make a difference, but i’m a girl so what can i do? i have to dress a certain way. i have to talk a certain way. i must be someone i don’t want to be.
once i got to an age of understanding, i realized that this was all a load of bull. i CAN make a difference. but there’s so many laws and double standards holding me back, so how was i going to do this?
i, just like every other female, has had to put up with a lot more than men have. between small human indecencies like cat calling and being scared to go outside alone to laws determining what we can do we our bodies and how much we will make, it was hard to dream.
once i got to my senior year and knew that i wanted to work in the business world and make it a better, safer place for females, i knew this wasn’t going to be easy. but then taylor released “the man”
we have seen taylor go through hell and back because she is a woman. she was sl*t shamed. she was told how to act. told what to wear. but if she could make it through all of that and still make a difference, so could i.
so when applying to school, i decided to take a long shot and apply directly for my university’s business school. not many people get in directly, and don’t get accepted until later in school. but that wasn’t stopping my determination.
i worked my ass off in high school to get good grades, participate in everything, and still make it through the struggles of being female in what seemed to be a male dominated place.
and i made it. i was one of the very few directly admitted into the business school with one of the highest scholarships my school could offer. the little girl who dreamed of this finally turned into a young woman who got it.
so now i know i can make a difference, just like i wanted to and just like how taylor did. and the man helped me do so.
“they’d say i hustled, put in the work”. i did just that. and my worth will not be determined by men in my field. it will be determined by me, a young woman with big dreams. so thank you @taylorswift13 , thank you for the man.
