There was no failure of catechesis after the Council. Catholics have never been especially well catechised. Joan of Arc's understanding of catechesis was learning the Our Father & Hail Mary. In an age of unprecedented literacy, Catholics have an unprecedented level of knowledge.
The 40's & 50's weren't a golden age of Catholicism. This is literally just the racist, sexist "baby boomer" narrative of decline, applied to Catholicism. It's no wonder the traditionalist movement is 99% MAGA now. It's ideology, not history, and certainly not theology.
