A couple of thoughts on New Street since we’re almost at the end of the trial pedestrianisation period.

IMO this has been a really positive change - over the last couple of weeks I’ve really enjoyed spending time there.

Most of my visits to New St before now would’ve been to go to a specific shop/restaurant/pub. With busy traffic and a crowded path, there just wasn’t space to stop, stroll or window shop. That’s completely changed now - we no longer have to rush to avoid blocking the path.
Rather than the street being full of cars (with associated noise & fumes) people are walking along, taking time to drop into shops, sitting down to enjoy food or coffee, just enjoying the space.

It’s a far nicer atmosphere and somewhere you’d want to walk to rather than through.
It’s a shame that the conversation around this online has become so divisive.

A particularly strange tendency among some (by no means all) anti-pedestrianisation commenters was responding to comments from those in favour suggesting they must be “blow-ins” or “not from Malahide”
Thankfully haven’t seen that in a while but
1) Plenty of people live in Malahide who aren’t originally from there & opinions don’t matter more/less based on how long you’ve been in the town
2) Surely it’s a positive that more people are visiting the village & enjoying the street!
On the whole I think this has been a great initiative & I’d really like to see it continue. Know not everyone will agree but wanted to give my perspective!
