#Beirut_Blast: lets talk a bit about @UNIFIL_ and its Maritime Task Force present at Beirut harbour
THREAD ⬇️
MaritimeTaskForce mandate is to inspect vessels to "verify that there are no unauthorized arms or related materiel on board" w/ LAF&Customs
These is ZERO mention of NitrateAmmonium cargo in UNSG semestral UNIFIL reports for period after Rhosus docked in Port (yes read them all)
In Nov 2017, UNIFIL intended to reduce "maritime personnel [...] with reconfiguration of Maritime Task Force" [S/2017/964]
July 2018: UNIFIL reports:"MTF continues to play important stabilizing role controlling Lebanese territorial waters" [S/2018/703].
Even better/March 2019:UNIFIL&LAF agree on "transition strategy" w/ "aim of decreasing responsibilities of MTF" &hand it to LAF [S/2019/237]
In last report last June,UNIFIL raises "with LAF concern at decrease in inspections since July 2019" [S/2020/710],uncovering shaky hand-over
And so, thousands of ships were inspected by UNIFIL in co-operation with the LAF & Customs, but couldn't consider "floating bomb ship"?
How could this be???!
🇱🇧 deserve to know why, without excluding ANY of stakeholders involved. @UNIFIL_ we would appreciate some answers /
