How unaffordable is child care in Multnomah County?

Why, thank you for asking!

This report from Dr. Megan Pratt and the Oregon Child Care Research Partnership gets into some numbers https://health.oregonstate.edu/sites/health.oregonstate.edu/files/early-learners/pdf/county/multnomah/multnomah-profile-2018.pdf
Median annual price of toddler care in a child care center: $16,236

Median annual price of public university tuition in Oregon: $7,680
That's right — in Multnomah County, toddler care costs more than double public university tuition.

That's messed up.
To pay for child care for a toddler, a minimum wage worker would have to pay 67% of their income.

Uh...what?
Maybe that's why, according to a 5-year average of US Census data from 2012 – 2016...

Only 53% of Multnomah County children age 3-4 were enrolled in preschool 😫
Meanwhile, the range of annual median teacher wages (median low - median high) was:

$24,190 - $33,280

Those wages don't respect the essential nature of child care work or the skill and dedication of our early childhood educators
Are you kidding us, Multnomah County? We're better than that!

In November we can do something about this!
