.."Expert Harvey Elwin said he had never seen as much secrecy around a dam project in his 50 years of working on dams around the world - including the Three Gorges Dam in China - as he had seen around the #SiteC dam." What does that signal to British Columbians? #bcpoli
Other tidbits from @sarahcox_bc radio interview: If the deadline for the #SiteC river diversion is missed this Sept, that's another $billion down the drain on top of all the other overruns. The diversion tunnels may be finished, but other elements needed for the diversion aren't.
..Sarah Cox says the serious foundation problems on the South bank at #SiteC have been known for 2 years (so making Covid excuses is absurd). And BC Hydro poured 1.2 million cubic metres of concrete on it anyway! Now they have no idea how to fix this or what it will cost. #bcpoli
..Sarah Cox: 'a conveyor belt needed to bring material to the site has had problems, including water problems, and hasn't been working.' The conveyor is likely also needed for the building of cofferdams to divert the river into the tunnels. Can't build #Site til that's done...
.. #SiteC will be another stranded asset, like #MuskratFalls and many other dams around the world. So why do they keep being built, and who's benefiting? Other renewables are greener, cheaper, and geographically closer to demand.
..My reaction to this radio interview, as with everything else about #SiteC: the dam is such a colossal mountain of mistakes, secrecy, hubris, ignorance, willful obliviousness, backhanders, criminal negligence & reckless defiance of public safety, it feels more literary than real
..Which reaction then immediately gives way to anger at every institutionalized ENGO in BC, their ranks full of NDP partisans, their convenient sole focus on TMX which is Alberta/federal, their silence on #SiteC as they sit in their offices trying to build their email lists.
One of them said to me "there's no point in fighting #SiteC because we can't win" as if any fight in this benighted province seems winnable..until we win. Also "it's not what our donors want to donate to." It's your job to tell them to what to donate to, you ninny! Do some work!
What the absent ENGOs have done, other than use their big grant monies to buy up all available space for enviro concerns in the public's limited attention span, is left these massive issues to tiny groups and citizens to fight alone. #SiteC, fracking/LNG, and forestry. #bcpoli
We should ask why people think #TMX is the most important enviro issue in BC. Fortunately the #Wetsuweten got a fracked gas pipeline into public awareness, but where are the anti-fracking campaigns? Professionalized ENGOS bear no resemblance to the enviro move't they displaced.
..This means the Hollyhock mafia & everyone attached to it, any enviro group whose figures have fallen into the trap of overtly/covertly engaging in partisan politics (a formerly unbreakable rule in the enviro move't - how to instantly lose leverage!): & grant-seeking machines.
..Sorry, forgot a key point: one of the #BCNDP's most egregious moves on #SiteC is that instead of restoring regulatory powers to the BCUC, they formed a secretive "project assurance board," & now they've hired a former BC Lib Finance deputy minister to oversee that board #bcpoli
