Downtown Kalamazoo: First Congregational Church is hosting a vigil at Arcadia Creek Festival Place after rumours spread that the Proud Boys, a white nationalist group, were holding a rally. Right now, members of an anti-fascist group are the only ones here. Stay tuned. @MLive
Community members are interacting with members of the anti-racist group; they don’t talk to media but did tell me some of them are Kalamazoo residents and some are from out of town. The group has an armed perimeter around the area.
Pastor of First Congretional Church of Kalamazoo Nathan Dannison thanked Carlos and the residents who are currently live at Arcadia Creek for allowing him to ask the city for a permit to hold today’s counter vigil. Right before we spoke he handed out five pizza’s to residents.
Pastor Dannison addresses the crowd, asks people to commit themselves to nonviolence this afternoon:
A crowd is forming toward the Arcadia Creek entrance
Proud Boys have arrived
Hell has broken loose
Proud Boys are attacking counter protesters, spraying pepper spray. I have been hit and sprayed.
Kalamazoo, Michigan
There have been no police present
Apologize for the delay. Police arrived as Proud Boys retreated to a parking garage nearby the Raddison HotelI. I was arrested and charged with impeding traffic while reporting live on Facebook for @MLive.
