The idea that a kid's show where a child finds out his entire race was murdered by finding the skeleton of his beloved mentor needs to be more "mature" or "dark, gritty" is everything I hate about our tone deaf, edge-lord post-Nolan media. -Thread

But sure! This show aimed at children could use more of an edge. I mean it's not like the crux of the entire original's story and setting is based off the fact that there's a flipping war full of genocide and ethnic suppression going on or anything.
Let's cast adults.
It's not enough that a big theme throughout the show's entire story is the tragedy of children and young teens being foisted into awful situations by war and genocide and the emotional and psychological damage they suffer from it.

I guess it's just not enough that we have:
A rebel society of orphaned children and teens who hate their enemies so much that they decide to genocide a village full of civilians including innocent children just to take out the occupying soldiers.

It's not enough that we have:
A boy prince who was brutally scarred and disowned by his own father at 13.
A princess who is so emotionally damaged by her father's abusiveness, her mother's abandonment, and her friend's betrayal that she has a murderous breakdown.

It's not enough that this kid's show presents all these harrowing themes of war and violence while never framing an entire race as pure evil.
It's not enough that you can have a kid's show that teaches that even people fighting on the side of the good guys can be just as cruel

and extremist as the genocidal fascist regime they're fighting against.
Let's ignore all those stupid happy characters like Ty Lee and the idea that you don't have to be a bad person to be part of and contribute to an evil system. Because happiness is for wimps.

Let's ignore how all these ideas that can encourage kids to be more critical of actions over good intentions. And how dangerous believing "the ends justifies the means" way of thinking actually is.
