Dhoni's most celebrated moment will always be the 2011 World Cup but the 2007 T20 World Cup heralded the arrival of the T20 era & will ultimately be his most enduring legacy. The game changed forever between September 2007 & April 2008 & Dhoni was the emblem of that change.
Dhoni retires as one of India's greatest cricketers but more significantly as one of our sport's most symbolic players. As India rose to dominate the game Dhoni was the bridge between the class of Tendulkar & the fire of Kohli, bringing ice-cool captaincy, big hitting & swagger.
Under Dhoni India won three ICC events in six years where previously they had won just two in their entire history & they became Test number one for the first time. As India became the game's economic behemoth he brought them success on the field to match their domination off it.
