I dunno who needs to hear this, but I’m a former mailman and finally there’s something I am qualified to have an opinion on regarding privatization of #USPS. I see a lot of supposedly leftist folks saying “let #ups #fedex #amazon do the job 1/?
First of all, if you are claiming to be leftist or progressive and advocating for Jeff Bezos controlling their mail, you can miss me with that stuff just straight from the top. Why not just change to email and let #Facebook do it, then you could at least pretend it’s #GoGreen 2/?
But the problem with #ups and #fedex taking over is the idea many people don’t know about called the “Last Mile.” I’ll give you the short version: neither UPS nor FedEx have the infrastructure to deliver to everyone everywhere. Especially in rural areas like a lot of the USA 3/?
So these companies charge you a premium to deliver (for their premium service) and then they send your package to the nearest UPS or FedEx hub. At which point they purchase postage for that package from USPS (at a deep discount because they’ve made special deals) 4/?
Gues who delivers your UPS or FedEx package for the ‘Last Mile’? Your mail man, because he was going to be there anyway. #USPS needs the revenue from this deal to function, but the other companies need USPS to do the actual work. 5/?
If USPS refused to deliver last mile for these other companies, they’d probably go bankrupt trying to build the infrastructure to deliver to everywhere in the country. #USPSisEssential
