The conversation on black women sexuality, sexual desire, sexual objectification & agency is an extremely complex one. And not one that needs to be led or hijacked by a white man.
The problem fundamentally is this, if you have no problem with porn then why do you have a problem with WAP. Yes, it is soft porn. I don’t think we can seriously disagree on this (I take porn here to simply mean sexually explicit & for the purpose of entertainment).
So we always return to that 1) Is porn only ever ok if led by men (ideally white) men’ desire & fantasies?
2) can women ever (loudly) enjoy sex without ever being accused of betraying feminism of taking women babkward? 3) can black women dispose of their body the way they want?
I also think there are more complex questions? Where does agency start and objectification begin? What place does sexual trauma occupy in this? Who* is gaining the most materially from the billions this hit is generating? But also, who is being negatively affected?
Meghan was shot at right, a few weeks ago? (Did not follow closely). Where was the outrage? She grieved her mother publicly, where was the support? She was mocked. Ridiculed. There was some support too but gosh the nastiness took my breath away.
Same with Cardi b, she was publicly ridiculed for being cheated on. Mocked. Where were all those who care about black women welfare and feminism at?
So you see, this is why I can’t this feminist critiques seriously. Always ready to bounce from nowhere and bring that energy because there is nothing that excite them more than policing black women who dare to be free & carefree.
And finally yes, this is about power. Sex IS power. We may not like it*. It is one of our* world global currency. And there is absolutely nothing the world hates more than black women inhabiting power, in all its forms.
That is why it keeps silent when we’re sexually abused & vitimised but come moralising when we re-claim that power. My only concern for the pair is trauma. I have a feeling it’s in the mix. But do not want to speculate. I wish them well. Peace.
