Cleft Lip/Palate is most common congenital orofacial anomaly (1:700 live births)

The human face develops in the 4th - 10th weeks of gestation, and involves fusion of 5 embryonic facial prominences: midline frontonasal prominence and bilateral maxillary & mandibular prominences.
Cleft lip occurs when maxillary prominence fails to fuse with midline nasal prominence.

Cleft palate occurs when palatine prominences fail to fuse.

The majority of cases occur in isolation, and are not associated with a syndrome.
The evaluation and repair of CLP involves a multidisciplinary team, and begins immediately after delivery.

Pediatric Craniofacial Clinics see babies almost immediately after discharge to create presurgical orthopedics, and surgical repair usually begins at ~3 months of life.
These surgical repairs are so incredibly complex, it’s astounding.

Shoutout to Plastics and OMFS, for real.
