1/n Let me tell you how I internalised my own exam failure: with 5 GCSEs at grade E, a grade A,B&C in German, English & Urdu, & an Access certificate in teaching, I set out to do a degree in mathematics! #AlevelResults #alevels2020
2/n I retook my GCSE maths and achieved a grade B. Enough for me to write in my personal statement: ‘my grades do not reflect my ability’. Got my uni place through clearing with an offer that required me to do a foundation degree in maths.
3/n From that moment onwards I set out on a journey to prove, I’m not a failure. I overachieved and excelled at the expense of my time with my children, family and friends...my well-being!
4/n Even after 3 first class degrees, I ended up emailing my PhD course director, if my GCSE failure will affect my admission to the course! I was riddled with anxiety even after ten years!
5/n I can’t even imagine what our young generation has been going through since the #ALevelsResults. I ask again: what mental health provisions have been put in place for our students to cope with this disaster during a world-wide pandemic? @GavinWilliamson
6/n This Tory government has robbed our students of individuality through an algorithm system set out to disadvantage students from marginalised backgrounds. #removethetorygovernment
7/n Years, possibly decades of work trying to close attainment gaps has been undone by a stupid algorithm. #ALevelResultsDay
