Our study on preeclampsia + chronic kidney disease (CKD) now published in @PLOSMedicine https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article/authors?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.1003255
We followed 1.9 million women + 3.7 million births over 41 years. Women w/ preeclampsia had double the risk of future CKD (1/6)
We followed 1.9 million women + 3.7 million births over 41 years. Women w/ preeclampsia had double the risk of future CKD (1/6)
Results consistent across multiple different types of CKD, but strongest (4x higher) for hypertensive or diabetic CKD. Postpartum HTN did not fully explain links. (2/6)
For obstetricians… Preterm preeclampsia + recurrent preeclampsia a/w higher risk of CKD. Concurrent SGA made minimal difference. Gestational HTN a/w modest risk future CKD, but largely explained by links to postpartum HTN. (3/6)
For nephrologists… preeclampsia 2x higher risk of glomerular CKD, but lower risk of tubulo-interstitial or other types. Glomerular damage from preeclampsia seems long-lasting in some women. No association found b/w gestational HTN and glomerular CKD. (4/6)
Adds to evidence of risk of heart disease, end-stage kidney disease, stroke... the case for future monitoring of women w/ preeclampsia is growing. How do we use this info? Screening? Clinical risk prediction? Postpartum clinics? Do women + doctors know about these links?
