a few things to know about desis bc i'm tired of everyone invalidating us.
DESIS COME IN ALL SKIN COLORS. some of us are dark-skinned and some of us are light-skinned. this does not make us any less desi. as for me, my parents have dark skin and i have light skin, so idk what happened there +
but it doesn't matter where they're from, any desi person can have dark skin or light skin.
NOT EVERY DESI PERSON IS HINDU. hinduism is a religion. for example, i am hindu because i practice hinduism. but do you know how many religions there are? desi people can be muslim or sikh or christian or buddhist or atheist or any other religion that they +
choose to follow/not follow. just like in america or the uk, not everyone is christian.
NOT EVERY DESI PERSON SPEAKS HINDI. there are dozens of desi languages. plus, the languages are so different. for example, if i'm in india from an area that speaks hindi and move even a few states/provinces +
away to an area that speaks gujarati, i wouldn't be able to understand anything.
NOT EVERY DESI PERSON IS INDIAN. there are so many regions of the world from where the people are considered desi. desi ≠ indian. it's often traced down to (but not limited to) india, pakistan, and bangladesh, but there's more +
if someone says they're desi and you doubt them because they're not from one of these three places, then stop.

stop mocking us. stop using our accents for shits and giggles to get a laugh out of the next white person. it makes us feel like a joke. stop making fun of songs like tunak tunak or that aaaAAaah song from tiktok or whatever. it's part of our culture
also, not every desi person is super duper smart and works in IT.
a few things i'd like to add is that a lot of things are cultural appropriation that you might not know about. karma and manifestation - of course if you practice witchcraft, manifestation is fine and i'm not going to tell you not to use it. but it's the ppl who water down +
terms like karma and manifestation for trends without realizing where they come from and how deep they are. because if you all see a desi person do it traditionally i swear you guys would make fun of them for it. also, wearing henna is okay as long as you understand the +
origins of it and don't just use it as an aesthetic. bindis are also ca. plus, wearing a salwar without leggings is extremely disrespectful.
also, if you are not desi, you cannot use the word "desi" or call us "desis". please call us south asian. desi is derived from the sanskrit देश (deśá), meaning land or country. desi in itself means our land. so please don't use it
we might not call you out on it, but we see desi people being invalidated all the time. please respect us and don't speak over us. that's all :D
please remember that India is not only limited to the northern indians you see and india is made up of a lot of cultures!! i'm saying this as an indian
i'm muting this but you can dm me for questions
