I made this evaluation two years ago and Leaf fan almost imploded, but I still think it holds true - Kotkaniemi may prove to be as valuable to his team as Matthews in his prime. Auston is a better skater and shooter; he will score more goals without question. An elite sniper.
But we are already seeing the character and all-around play that Kotkaniemi will bring a team that will help them win at playoff time. I think will be a better playmaker, compete harder in all three zones, and play a more physical, playoff-type style. Pick your poison.
There is this misconception that playing a month in the AHL at 19 automatically disqualifies you from ever being mentioned in the same breath as the mighty Matthews, but that is complete hogwash. Matthews didn't have knee surgery when he was 18 years old. It set KK back.
Matthews will likely end his career with more regular-season pts, and I certainly expect him to have more career goals.
Will he have more playoff points and wins? That remains to be seen, and for me; that's the ultimate Litmus test, and why you pick players in the top 5; to win.
