This is very distressing and also expected. Mainly pākehā affected first time cause of travel privilege. Concerned the impact will be felt deeply in M & P communities given shit access to quality health care, racism in health syst & already disproportionate health inequities. https://twitter.com/Jubes11/status/1294593635753660419
As a matter of urgency Govt and Min of Health COVID response must centre māori in response and decision making. In flu pandemic Māori were 8 x more likely to die. We cannot entrench inequities here. COVID response is very pākehā led.
Compounded by lower incomes and essential but low paid mahi this places pressure on already under pressure whānau. COVID response can't just be the economy but centre M&P communities when the majority of the economy is built on the shoulders of keeping brown people poor.
$ needs to go immediately to māori and pacific orgs who our whānau engage with. Mainstream aren't trusted by our communities before COVID and that won't change now. We need accessible testing and support. Don't want sick whanau to go to work cause they can't afford not to
Our lives matter and our pacific whanaunga too. The current COVID wave in NZ is fact impacting our people. This is not the time to play politics with our lives. And it is never the time to prioritise the economy over our lives.
