ok i know nobody cares but i might as well make a thread rant about the seventeen - cupid situation because i like to believe 4 years of going to college for music production gotta give me at least an ounce of authority to speak on this.
i think a lot of people are not understanding what a sample actually is. for there to be sampling there needs to be a piece of a previous song inserted into a new one. for example a guitar riff, a few seconds of a melody, or a beat. which in this case hasn't happened.
there are 3 points that both songs have in common: the words "left and right", a beat, and instruments. for the first point, the usage of the words "left and right" cannot be waved around as sampling because there is no audio clip in svts song of cupid's voice saying it.
also anyone can make a song about the concept of "left and right" or say it and sing it. it is not a concept owned by anybody. there is no plagiarism in this aspect. the second point is the beat. many people are claiming the beat is the same for both songs
which i'm sorry to inform you, is not the case. cupid posted a video to accuse svt of sampling but it actually highlights the difference between the songs (to me). after watching it im actually more convinced the beats are different. however, this is very tied to the instruments.
2 instruments used are very similiar, if not the same. 1st, a clap. which you can find in almost every keyboard virtual instrument and tend to sound not that different from each other. after all, they're claps. sorry, but i can't give that one to you. 2nd, what i guess is a
synth pad. i sadly dont know the exact name but its the soft bouncy sound you hear in both intros. the fact that these two instruments have been used together in an acapella beat is why so many people sense a similarity. however i repeat, the beats are not the same.
do a little listening exercise and listen to both songs with your eyes closed and try to follow both the claps and synth with a snap or a hand movement and you'll realize how different they are.
i have made this thread off the top of my head and i really dont expect that many people to read it lol. it would definitely be smart for pledis to release a statement and to contact cupid to reach a settlement. i sense they will probably write him into the credits to avoid
a lawsuit like they did with coldplay and the chainsmokers, which as a musician rubs me wrong because false sampling claims are all over the place. however i understand why cupid feels wronged, but in my humble opinion the facts dont add up. it also saddens me
to see people jumping to make this a racial issue, when its purely a music issue. (again in my opinion) people silencing carats, starting to call seventeen names and rubbing up to cupid on his mentions... nah it doesnt sit right with me. so much could be avoided but people just
love drama and bringing artists down. hope to see a quick settlement and no dirt smeared on svts image but i can only wish for the best. anyways, rant over im sorry for this lol
adding an extra tweet to say you're absolutely allowed to disagree with me - that's how life works. i'm open to discuss things, my dms, replies, its all there. i wanna make it clear its not my intention to downplay any artists, especially those who are seniors to seventeen
