wtf is up with tpwk, an essay on the tl: tpwk is faux happy .. it‘s almost sarcastic, it’s like a parody. it’s overwhelmingly positive with the chorus and the sappy preachy lyrics to the point where it feels forced. but it has that underlying darkness to it: talking about +
“[finding] a place to feel good” and that line about “if our friends all pass away it’s okay”. because he’s NOT in a good place (he’s still hung up over the relationship, he’s still thinking about it and missing it as you can see with canyon moon) yet he’s trying to force this
positivity and to get over it quicker. obv this doesn’t work. so you have “all we want is automatic all the time” because he just wants to shut down and become robotic and stop feeling those emotions. he’s not embracing happiness, he’s rejecting sadness. fine line is the +
antithesis to this. he accepts that both are a reality in his life. rather than trying to become “automatic” he learns to seek feelings again: “put a price on emotion, looking for something to buy”. however he’s not seeking happiness specifically, rather he’s embracing the +
various “fine lines” of the human experience. the range of emotions he will feel. rather than searching for that “place to feel good” he’s content with the knowledge that “we’ll be alright”. note the use of future tense: he is not alright currently, but he is accepting +
that it’s alright to be in a low mood. he holds onto the hope, the certainty that better times are ahead, rather than trying to force himself into feeling something he isn’t feeling, or indeed feeling nothing at all.
