We need to remember that diversity is the means to an end. Diversity centres Whiteness and allows it to be. invisible whilst creating generalisations for "others". Diversity isn’t complexity, and ultimately, what we want is not a diverse community but a complex one.
By accepting diversity as an end we are just fooling ourselves into thinking that the playing field is equal. By seeing "diversity" as success, we aren't critiquing what we value as Success.
So often the idea of success that people congratulate me being on the path to achieving is an ideal that is at odds with my racial identity - because the idea of "success" is based on erasing my racial identity because success has socio-political values where Whiteness is top.
"The further you are away from White, the more trouble you are." I say this because our idea of success, whilst the measures for success can often seem as though they are objective and apathetic of politics, our ideals of success are heavily politicised& constructed with bias
Trying to attain success within a value system that inherently others you is a straw man success. The celebration of successful Aboriginal ppl like myself is often nothing more than a message to say “Assimilate harder”
