]To fairly judge the true character of any good politician, you have to see them in action with their mask off dealing with people who they don't know and who cannot advance their political agenda. For example, you can learn something important by watching that politician
] interact with a stranger in a private moment where there is no public audience to observe her action or failure to act. FWIW, I do not know Kamala Harris but I observed the following in a Sacramento, Ca. mall many years ago. A very young boy[4-6 ?] was sitting alone on a bench
] inside a large empty public concourse waiting for someone. I had noticed the boy crying as I was shopping in a near by store and was thinking about whether I should approach him to see if I could help. As I considered what to do, I saw
] Harris[then the AG of California] walk up to the boy's bench and sit next to him. She started talking to the boy and took out a hankerchief to wipe away his tears and then gave him a big hug. As I left the store, I heard her say to the boy; " I will stay here with you until
] your mom comes back to get you, ok?" The boy smiled and thanked her as I left the concourse. I learned the next day that Harris was on her way to an important legislative hearing where she was the primary witness. Apparently,
] someone had chided her for being late. Harris apologized for her tardiness without explaining the reason for it. She could have exploited the opportunity by relating her kind gesture to the boy in a public setting. She simply apologized. That day, I decided to watch her public
] career more closely. KH is one of those rare politicians[Biden is another] whose private self is close to her public self. If you care not only about a politician's policies but about their character and whether they are "authentic", KH is the real deal.
] Fair Disclosure: I would have voted for Joe regardless of who he had picked to run with him. But, picking someone who clearly represents the future of a truly diverse Democratic leadership is a welcome addition to the ticket. It also says something vital about Biden.
] Harris wounded Joe at a personal level with her debate attack of his earlier views about busing. But, Joe got over it and focused on what was best for the country when he selected Harris as his running mate. I hope they work well together if elected because our country is
] facing an existential crisis. Apart from a recession with disastrous levels of unemployment and a raging pandemic, we are confronting the very worst aspects of the American character as Trump appeals to the worst in us. Will we repudiate such racism?Shore up the institutional
] cracks that have threatened our democratic institutions? Reinvigorate our best national aspirations and listen to the better angels inside all of us? Or continue our descent towards an authoritarian regime that deimates our former commitment to the rule of law? Its up to us.
