#OnThisDay August 12th 2000

While on exercise in the Barents sea the Project 949A Antey (NATO codenamed Oscar II) class submarine K141 Kursk Sank with the loss of all 118 hands. 1/6
Kursk was a nuclear powered cruise missile submarine (SSGN) designed specifically to interdict Carrier battle groups with her main arm of 24 P700 (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) Cruise missiles. 2/6
Project 949A submarines are huge: 154 meters long 18 meters wide and a draught of 9 meters
These boats when fully loaded displace 18,000tons of water (similar to the displacement of the Ohio class SSBN) 3/6
Like her sisters and some other submarines the Kursk was powered by two OK-650B reactors producing around 100,000shp turning two 7 bladed propellers giving the submarine a top speed estimated at over 30 knots. 4/6
In 2001 Kursk was raised and the submarine inspected, it is believed a faulty 65cm torpedo caused the disaster since then the torpedo has been withdrawn from service.

This tragerdy not only affected the families of the crew it affected every nation that has a navy. 5/6
