New theory time! ✨

One of the biggest hints that Rey and Ben’s story is going to continue in a mythic, epic way is the emphasis SW canon has put on the Unknown Regions.

So let’s go down that rabbit hole, shall we?
Obligatory disclaimer bc ppl on this app arent nice:
Im always open to questions and some respectful debate BUT if you’re here just to shit on the theory, say “wrong!” Or “DLF is too dumb for this” please just dont comment. I work for *hours* on these & its not cool
If you dont leave rude comments on Fics, don’t do it here. I block liberally ✌🏻
Thesis: The ST wasn’t the “End of the Skywalker Saga” in the sense that most of us think about when we hear it.

There’s not going to be a Empire vs Rebels kind of conflict at the heart of what comes next -> the ST was a transition into a much more spiritual/lore-centric era
In the PT, the struggle had a political focus. In the OT, it was familial. In the ST, this was 1st time the mythic stuggle felt like it was at the forefront of the three values SW balances

It was set up to shift our focus beyond the limits of the GFFA & the Force as we know it.
So first things first. What are the Unknown Regions?

The UR, along with Wild Space, are two areas of mystery in the galaxy. The difference being that the GFFA has attempted to explore the UR and has some idea of things that are in there

Per Pablo:
In the Aftermath trilogy, this is how its described:

Later, they explain some probes have been able to ping back but there’s massive static problems and some explorers have radioed in but have gone mad
Here’s some maps of the region and the few planets we know are out there

(The third is a fan made map, compling data from across the board. The blue dots are legends so feel free to ignore those)
Throughout the new canon we’ve (the characters, the story, the audience) have been literally pushed to the edges of the galaxy and beyond for several major plot points of the new era:

Jakuu & Jedah are at the edge of the galaxy

ROKR comic: Elpharona is on the edge of the galaxy
Rebels: Lothal is on the edge of Wild Space, Lira San is inside Wild Space, Ezra/Thrawn get sent to the UR at the end of the series

The FO came from the UR on Illum

SW Resistance canonizes Rakata Prime, a world important to KOTOR, in the UR

Ahch-To, Exegol are in the UR
But the biggest one is Batuu aka: Galaxy’s Edge

Batuu was featured in the Thrawn reboot in both CW and Imperial eras and then it was the setting for GE’s release just in time for Tros promo

GE is set, time wise, between TLJ and Tros.
There’s already a slew of books, comics, a documentary & other tie in material to build out the world of Galaxys Edge.

As they expand the galaxy outwards & shift towards cosmic storytelling its a perfect place to wrap that all in, and build out on
In addition to these new settings, we (again characters, stories and the audience) are also being driven to pay attention to the UR bc of all the maps that are important in this new canon

They keep pointing us to the UR
In TLJ VD there’s a note about an ancient starmap on Ahch-to with outdated constellations.

But this idea of the constellations and finding an old map in the unknown, mystical hidden planet? It reminds me of the constellations in CW and the Rebels WBW arc
And the a big undercurrent in the Aftermath Trilogy and Thrawn books is Palpatine’s interest in mapping out the Unknown Regions.
Here’s some of the actual maps that we get

In Vader’s Immortal (a game tied to some wbw lore in Imperial era) you get a star map at the end of the game from an ancient lightsaber and it launches you into the unknown regions
In TFA, we get the Map from Luke that isnt in any Imperial or Republic record. It’s one he pieced together to try and find what he believes is the first Jedi temple

R2 has the galatic map that only the Empire had

If you look closely, its right in the unknown regions area
And then, of course, we have the Tros wayfinders to Exegol and the vergence scatter map in the VD
Now if you look closely again, you’ll see that the Vader Immortal, TFA and WbW maps all look very similar. Look at the planet with the rings

https://twitter.com/outletfangirl/status/1239900746939858945?s=21
But why are the Unknown Regions so important? Maybe they’re just coming up with new planets to market to avoid reusing the same ones?

To an extent, yes, new planets so we’re not stuck w/ a finite number. BUT the UR is expanding SW not just physically but spiritually.
They’re important because both Palpatine and Luke were led to the Unknown Regions in their searches for the history/origins of the Jedi and Sith.

In fact, at the battle of Endor before Luke came to the DS, Palps said this about Luke
So let’s start with Palpatine shall we?

Part 2: the fuck is up with Palpatine and Luke coming up after a short writing break
Before the Empire was officially established, Palpatine began building secret laboratories and observatories. Why?

He wanted more than just the galaxy

We know from Rebels that Palps new goal was getting into the WBW and gaining control of reality & the universe
In the Aftermath novels, we learn that his obsession with the Unknown Regions was part of that.

Look at these quotes:

First one is explaining why the Jakku observatory was built

Second is Tashu, an advisor to Palps and a leader in the Sith cult (more on that in a bit)
So what were Palpatines observatories?

We know of at least three for sure

Kashsyyk
Pillio
Jakku
First up Kashsyyk

It was based in an *Old Republic* ship. It was ultimately powered by the prisoners life force. At some point they were all given chips that turned them into sleeper agents

Theres not much beyond this other than its very interesting they highlight Old Rep here
Meeko an imperial was sent to Pillio to destroy this observatory after Palps death

Luke was on the same trail. Why?

“If the Empire is here then what I sensed is true. There must be something special about this place.”

He ends up finding the compass - thats what he was sensing
Remember where we saw this compass last time? TLJ

It was attuned to Ahch-To & thats how Luke found his way there

Funnily enough though, it doesnt that big of a role in either TLJ or Battlefront. But its important to highlight in both (Theres another reason but we’ll get there)
Also like the TLJ ancient star map, the compass’ symbols are similar to iconography on the Mortis map.

Which is fitting...seeing as Dave Filoni designed it.
And then, of course, there’s Jakku.

The observatory is a huge plot point in the trilogy that literally transitions the OT into the ST, it sets up the events leading into TFA and hints at Palpatines influence over the whole thing
Imo, I don’t think there was ever a specific plan for Palps (ie: bring him back to life literally) but he was always supposed to have some overarching influence on the last movie

It makes sense: if the ST is a transition trilogy, & Palps goal was the wbw thats how they link it
Anyway, the Jakku observatory had three purposes

1. Blow up Jakku via a shaft to the core
2. Plot hyperspace lanes in the UR
3. Stored a handful of Sith relics that would unleash a wave of dark energy when detonated
Of important note:
Remember how I said his obsession with the Unknown Regions was linked to his crusade for the WBW?

This phrase is so telling: “the unexplored infinity”

The WBW is a gateway between all time and space “He who controls it controls the universe”
Also Luke was at the Jakku observatory during or after the Battle of Jakku

Its not clear exactly what he saw or did there bc its part of a book of Tall Tales about him so its all purposefully vauge

But thats twice now Luke has been drawn to an observatory
But even beyond the Observatories (which where his institutional front), the Aftermath trilogy shows that Palpatine was cultivating a cult

And that cult ended up ensuring he had the means to transfer his consciousness, the foundation of the Sith Cult we see in Tros

Part 2B next
So the cultists we see in Tros are part of a cell that formed *before* TFA
They rise up in the aftermath of Endor
Tashu, Palps advisor, was a dark side worshiper & helped pull this group together as part of the Contingency to evacuate loyal ppl to the UR and start the Empire over
They were mostly children and teenagers. Their children and their children’s children become the sith cult and sith armada we see in Tros

Its all part of a weird pattern for Palpatine: “The Empire needs children”

It happens in CW, Rebels, the FO troopers and Ben Solo
Anyway, this group is called: The Acoyltes of the Beyond

Theyre not force sensitive themselves but their whole thing before Exegol is tracking down sith relics to either sacrifice or use. They claim to get instructions from Sith past in their dreams

Look at the line about death
Eventually they riot & attack locals on Devaron - in a spot specifically close to the old Jedi temple (featured in Fallen Order) which is on a vergence - and use the sith relics to try and gain more power

Tashu does it too on Jakku before being thrown into the pit as a sacrifice
So to review: Palpatines interest in the beyond was already peaked before his fall.

He was actively building up loyal cultists, moving massive resources, investigating the origin of some mysterious signal — all of this happening at the same time we know he’s working on the wbw
But he’s not the only one.

Now on to Luke Skywalker.

His own research of the history of the jedi also led to the Unknown Regions with Ahch-To and Exegol. But there’s more...
So after the battle of Endor Luke started going on missions to rescue force sensitive items from the Empire

In a span of a few months he trained Leia (somehow tros?) then split after she chose to leave bc a year later (in the events leading up to Battle of Jakku) He was gone
Leia hadn’t heard from him in a long time, she felt like he had just left. She figured he was out ~being a jedi~

It got to the point where Luke was such a mysterious legend and rarely seen that ppl didnt know if he was there for Ben’s birth
Because he went to Pillio *&* Jakku - we know he was investigating something while learning about Jedi lore & from what he said on Pillio it seems like the Force is calling him

“If the Empire is here then what I sensed is true. There must be something special about this place.”
Now remember, Snoke (aka Palps) used Ben to manipulate Luke into restarting the Jedi Order. Why? Bc his investigation into the “larger truths” and origins of the Jedi “endangered Snokes design”

He needed Luke distracted and vulnerable; and Ben away from his parents
So pre-Ahch-To exile, what did Luke do?
Well what we know for sure includes:
✨steal uneti tree fragments from Empire
✨visit Moraband & Devaron
✨visit Ossus to get the Rammahgon
Collected:
✨cracked kyber pendant
✨compass
✨jedi texts
✨holocron of Avar Kriss
Then in 21 ABY Luke felt a disturbance in the Force connected to Exegol and investigated it w/ Lando. Thats when they chased down Ochii

For context: Rey was 6 (probably already on Jakku) & Ben was 16 - seven years before his fall. Snoke was in his head by then.
My best guess is that disturbance was Rey. Specifically when parents left her on Jakku & died.

Palps was already making ripples in & Luke didnt know, so I think whatever pain Rey had that day rippled out. Maybe she was tethered to Exegol some how? Idk but i want that story too
So what does this all mean? Why do we care that Palpatine and Luke ended up in the UR?

Because they went there after finding *clues* & being guided in their journeys in the history of the force.

And it left us with so many unanswered questions bc thats what comes next
Posting parts three and four tomorrow!
Part 3

So let’s dive into some of that history and lore they were exploring shall we?

Back to dear ol Palps...so even before he was Emperor had the resources to do whatever he wanted, he was collecting *sith* relics and keeping them in his Senate chambers
Then, once he secured power and killed off all the jedi, he broke into Joscata Nu’s archive at the Jedi Temple. Essentially he took the Jedi’s collections of artificats for his own.

Of particular note for me is: the Momin mask.
For two reasons:
1. momin transfers his essence after he dies like Palps did
2. Momin is basically an experiment (w/ Vader as the test rat) on how to life immortal life and/or rip a hole to the beyond https://twitter.com/OutletFangirl/status/1229980651572678668
Now he didn’t show Vader the WBW, I think he ended up ripping all the way *through* the wbw to the Netherworld of the Force, but its literal dark side

Anyway, its so interesting to see Momin talk about the Dark Side & this mysterious ultimate power

Again Vader is a lab rat here
Back to Luke

The two Jedi texts specifically named are the Rammahgon & the Aionomica

R: “conflicting origin stories about the cosmos & the Force; a poem describing gods battling in the primeval universe”

A: some “earliest accounts of explorations & codifications in the Force”
In the Tros Art book R connects Exegol, Wayfinders and the WBW map all together

This is the book that Luke added his personal notes to

And in the VD the jedi texts are on the same page as the “Netherworld of Unbeing” aka the World Between Worlds
Besides just Palpatine and Luke, generally in the new canon there’s been a theme of expanding Force spirituality in cultures new and old

Here’s Pablo talking about the this as seen in Rebels. Zeb uses his staff and is almost their own chosen one that finds their new home
Another religion that gets a lot of attention is: the Church of the Force
Tekka helps Luke’s research and of course opens TFA, but they also have a presence in Empires End

A few pilgrims are tasked w returning kyber crystals to a cave on Christophsis
Others on the list:
* Anchorites: monks on Jakku once aligned with Jedi but are twisted & believe suffering is the true light
*Guardians of the Whills (as seen kn Rouge One)
* whatever Maz is
* Ordu Aspectu: ancient jedi sect that wanted to supernaturally extend life for all
One that’s interesting to me is the Dai Bendu

They were canonized in Tros novel: They set up a monastery on what became Kijimi -> this was mentioned in Zorris arc

In Legends the Dai Bendu preceeded the Je’daii which set up on Tython. The Je’daii became Jedi.
Interesting side note about the Bendu.

Lucas, in an *early* draft of ANH, originally had “jedi-bendu”

In Rebels another nod was given: Jedi and Sith weild the Ahsla and Bogan, the light and the dark. Im the one in the middle. I’m the bendu.”
Honorable mentions: The Brotherhood of the Beatific Countenance, Ninn Orthodoxy, Phirmist

Also the Ordus were introduced by Dr Aphras father. So even just the existence of an archeologist character thats getting a huge marking and content push is 👀
As part of this sprituality expansion, there’s also a lot of new vergences on significant planets.

A vergence is essentially well of force energy. Its usually where portals to the WBW are. They can be places or people“
Obviously two big ones out of the ST are Ahch-To and Exegol -> but with all these crumbs leading a trail, there’s now three other canon contenders w/ Ahch-To and Jedah for deep, deep roots in Jedi history, and potential origin points

Ossus
Coruscant
Lothal
Tython
So Palps/Lukes searches for the origins of their force connections leads outwards to the Unknown Regions in the ST. Why is that important for *future* storytelling?

You might argue: the significance is over since they found Palpatine. That’s really where this was headed

Nah fam
Yes Exegol was the climax of the trilogy, but the world between world hints?

Those were imbeded into the movie subtly and hidden in the VD. Why? Bc its a crumb trail to keep us occupied until the next phase
The FO might have came from the UR, & finding Palpatine solved that mystery for the trilogy, but dont forget Luke & Palpatine where pulled there before F.O. ever existed

Instead of wrapping Exegol & this whole thing up in a neat bow, they leave out clues that theres more coming
theres more coming! But ya girl has got to work lol
How do we know searching the UR & this history research is going to be a fundamental part of the story going forward?

Bc its also linked to hyperspace travel: which we’ve already compiled a lot of evidence on as to how its linked to the wbw & could be endangered by a broken dyad https://twitter.com/OutletFangirl/status/1239900705999196162
Essentially in that theory:
*hyperspace is a part of the WBW in some fashion
* exploring the wbw is connected to hyperspace research
* a separated dyad could unleash unknown consequences on the fabric of space/time
So what are two big publishing projects coming up soon? Thrawn and High Republic

There wont be direct references to Rey/Ben and possibly not even to the wbw but I believe that these two are going to continue to lay the groundwork for the lore & space we’ll get in the next story
HR: Its a time in the galaxy when the Jedi are at their peak, so they probably have much better records of their history and origins and references to threats from beyond their known galaxy

Im hoping there might even be a dyad in HR - CS joked about it on WTF https://twitter.com/OutletFangirl/status/1239900780519440386
CS Book - which is the first book - is already showing us funky hyperspace issues w/ the Great Disaster

More importantly it confirms Hyperspace is relatively new, ppl are still nervous about its calculations and its not as safe as HS travel in the SW we know https://twitter.com/OutletFangirl/status/1275139308916260864
Now, onto Thrawn

He’s one of the most popular characters from Legends. They canonized his character in Rebels and relaunched a Thrawn trilogy that was a published 2017-2019

Heres the story group on bringing back Thrawn — spot the KH sighting 🔥
Thrawn is *from* the unknown regions- the Chiss have a whole civilization out there.

He offers to help Palpatine plot out the Unknown Regions in exchange for helping to protect his ppl from threats in the UR, thats part of the Jakku Observatory
Also hes an avid collector of history & relics from cultures not his own - hes collected jedi masks, mandalorian art, ryloth art and relics, evidently a bardottan (another force senstive culture in CW) statue

And of course he gets shot into the UR with Ezra at the end of Rebels
In the Thrawn books we actually get to meet one of the threats - an alien species called the Grysks

In book 2 (finished 2017) Thrawn and Vader go to *BATUU* to investigate a disturbance in the Force Palps senses. Its the Grysks enslaving Chiss and trying to conquer border worlds
The next trilogy is going to be a prequel series and it’s literally set in the UR. So we’ll learn about the Chiss and their enemies and whatever they know about the UR

The first book is called: Chaos Rising
So the HR and Thrawn are going to expand the galaxy both physically and in our understanding of the Force

Theyre laying the groundwork for a much more mythic tale that is leading us into a new era

Which seems to be under the creative eye of RJ https://twitter.com/twothatareone/status/1290711427939012609
But how do we know that its going to be about Rey and Ben? The Skywalker Saga is over. They’re done with the Skywalkers.

Well, not exactly.
Again when they say End of the Saga theyre talking about the family greek drama of falling from grace and struggling to come to the light. Theyre talking about Rebels vs Empire with Skywalkers as the heroes

Thats not whats coming next
KK already said they arent done with the skywalkers. But the drama - which centered really about the legacy characters of Luke Han & Leia - are over

But Rey/Ben are new characters. Yes Ben is linked to the Skywalkers but hes a Solo

Kk said they werent done with ST characters
Also....

This timeline from 2019 D23 shows a lot of empty space after Tros just saying
As for the actors...

Daisy is *still* doing official SW marketing videos along with Joonas which is odd which all the others are totally done

And Adam...well he’s obvious https://twitter.com/OutletFangirl/status/1230946528367386631
But besides the producers and actors and general 👀👀👀 at LFL, the *story* itself makes it clear that Ben and Rey are going to be at the center of this exploration of new mythic planets and the origin of the Force because they ALREADY are linked to Palps and Lukes reasearch
Palps weird shit on Jakku:

* was protected by Niima the Hutt and located near what became Niima Outpost -> aka right where Rey was abandoned & grew up

* Ben was born the day the contingency went into effect & the observatory was detonated at the Battle of Jakku
Lukes weird shit:
(Besides their search for Luke)
* Ben was part of his search for Jedi relics & temples
* The Ahch-To compass was seen in Ben’s room the night the temple burned
*Rey was actively researching the Rammaghon -> its where she learned about Exegol and the Wayfinder
But there’s one more thing that has me personally convinced that this is where Rey and Ben’s story is headed.

I know it’s controversial but you’ve made it this far, just hear me out.

The clue is:
Now, i just want to preface this with JJerio arent good writers & while the ideas im gonna lay out are good and interesting for SW, their writing didnt stick the landing

Esp with the postTros Luke worship and vessel discourse that was pushed to justify making her Rey Skywalker
And bc they dont offer any sort of explaination in the movie (for several things but this especially) it comes across as a shallow weird decision that contradicts the lesson she’s supposed to learn when she discovers shes a Palpatine “never be afraid of who you are”
Discourse aside - I truly believe Rey was supposed to be the “Skywalker” of the ST. But so was Ben

Theyre 2 halves of a whole: Ben represents the legacy, while Rey represents the *idea* of being a Skywalker

Shes the heroine to root for, and Ben is family/emotional weight
But JJerio in their incompetency took the metaphor and made it literal. Why? Pick a reason Im sure theres many dumb ones.

But why do I think Rey Skywalker means anything? Thrawn.

Remember the theories that Skywalker would be the name for new jedi?
Well in the Thrawn book released 2018 (but finished in 2017) we’re - and Anakin - are introduced to a new concept:

Chiss females are usually the only ones to have the force in their culture. They use their gifts to navigate in the UR.

The title they get: Skywalker
So I think Rey is going to be this version of a Skywalker: navigating the Unknown Regions in search of a way to get Ben back and in the process uncover new info about the Force and Jedi/Sith history
I always compare the Tatooine scene to the end of Rebels. Ezra/Ben are both lost, and Rey and Sabine both look determined at the end

Its the end of one story and the start of another https://twitter.com/OutletFangirl/status/1243025948036993026
So this was very long! But thanks for getting all the way through!
