you ever think about all the people having their sexual awakening over the last 4 years and the weird new crop of fetishes gonna develop?
like I think people assume fetishes are genetic...for some reason? but like a lot of the entire latex fetish/gas mask scene could be traced back to the prevalence of survivalism/WW3 paranoia in the '50s and '60s

if you don't know, Devil Girl From Mars was a 1950s atomic age B-movie produced over a few weeks, the titular Devil girl's costume was designed by John Sutcliffe AKA Rubber Johnny, THE photographic voice of the rubber/latex/gasmask scene (other stuff by him)
the big thing is that science has found fear can actually make you horny, it's pretty easy for your adrenaline and heart rate to be up and your body to interpret that as being DTF so people become attracted to stuff that was frightening to them...
...and if you were a kid coming of age in the '50s NOTHING was more frightening than nuclear war, it was such a taboo topic no one even dared mention it specifically so the gasmask and hazmat suit becomes a kind of taboo in and of itself, an object that's socially fetishized
there's a safety in exploring a fear around breaking social taboos in a private setting, it creates that feeling of getting away with something you're not supposed to and it became easy for that to apply to the post-apocalyptic atomic age aesthetic
