🚨Worried about the world's biggest dam #ThreeGorgesDam failing?

Take a look upstream at China's 2nd largest dam #XiluoduDam 😲 #三峡大坝

This is a 2020 image and it looks like work has taken place in an attempt to buttress it.

This thing is HUGE! At around 940 ft high and 700m wide, it holds back 12,670,000,000 cubic metres of water in a 200 km long reservoir.

China has a long history of corruption leading to poor construction standards and failure of capital projects.

The consistency and accurate pouring of concrete should be tightly controlled in such projects. This site looks to be shoddy, dirty and unkempt #XiluoduDam
The Yangtze River network is flooded at present due to an unusually heavy monsoon season. #ChinaFloods

There has been major flooding and landslides upstream and downstream of the #ThreeGorges. Recently there has been some seismic activity about 60 miles away from #XiluodoDam
Images of the #ThreeGorgesDam often fail to provide a sense of scale. This monster is about 600 ft high and 1.45 miles wide. Some of the world's largest cities, including #Wuhan and #Shanghai lie below it. #三峡大坝

Between Xiluodu Dam and #ThreeGorgesDam lies another monster, the Xiangjiaba Dam

At 528 ft high and over half a mile wide it is smaller than the #ThreeGorges, but is of similar construction.

If #XiluoduDam above it blows, it will likely top over and probably fail

A quick look the geography of this system:

The domino effect of Xiluodu Dam bursting and flowing down onto the other two major dams could lead to a fast flood of biblical proportions moving across China to Shanghai.
Some 40m people are already affected by the #ChinaFloods. Major population centres at risk from these dams include:

Chongqing (pop. 15m)
Wuhan (11m)
Nanjing (8.5m)
Shanghai (24m)

The #Yangtze basin is home to millions of farmers, many of whom are already suffering from floods
This 10 minute video shows some of the present flooding and includes a simulation of the #ThreeGorgesDam failing: A 100m high wall of water moving at 60mph!

Note the simulation is based on just the #ThreeGorges failing and normal water levels downstream
The reality might be far worse. This excellent thread by @man_integrated goes into much more detail describing the likely global effects of a #ThreeGorges failure

Famine, plague, war, global economic chaos . .

You thought #COVID19 was bad? 🙏
