THREAD 🧵 #SerbianCrimes tells the story of Kosovo Albanians during the war.

It is important to remember that these crimes were prepared by whole state propaganda throughout the Yugoslav regime. This same propaganda seems to be emerging again today. https://twitter.com/ambiciozi/status/1292236985764118530?s=20
Under YU regime, mere dissenting thought was a crime when it came to Albanians. And almost all Albanian families had to undergo Yugoslav oppression in one way or another: withdrawal of passports, dismissals, fines, obligation to report to the police, arrests, beatings, etc.
Thousands of Albanians were harassed, imprisoned, or even eliminated simply for having met X or Y, spoken about "Autonomy/Republic", read dissident newspapers, etc. To give an idea, Amnesty International (1986 Report) noted that 389 individuals were accused of "verbal crimes" (!)
Those "verbal crimes" for instance helped distinguish "hostile families" (e.g. Jasharaj family) and justified daily police intervention under any pretext in their homes. Their places became soon "irredentist villages/regions" (e.g.Drenica), and so on.
Indoctrination by the Serbian intelligentsia and media conditioned their people for decades. This propaganda and repression against Albanians under YU could only lead to these #SerbianCrimes. We should remember this, especially today.
Very interesting thread which casts a light on the role of the Serbian intellectual elite in the discourse preparation that helped condition the population and thus prepare the ground for the crimes committed during the 90’s wars in Former Yugoslavia https://twitter.com/sinanovicermin/status/1295488561815457795?s=21 https://twitter.com/sinanovicermin/status/1295488561815457795
