Went out to shoot Mars again last night but it turned into a full-blown Grand Tour. Imaged every planet except Mercury! Plus a few moons I didn’t expect to find.
Starting in the outer solar system, we find gas giants Jupiter, Saturn + Tethys, Uranus, & Neptune + Triton.

Moving inward, here’s an animated view of Mars, rotating about 7 degrees over a span of 30 minutes. By the way, Earth and Mars rotate at similar rates, with Earth spinning about 3% faster.
Purely by coincidence, this view captured Gale Crater, current home of @MarsCuriosity, & Jezero Crater, future home of @NASAPersevere! This view also features landing sites of Viking 2, Beagle 2, & Spirit.
Then there’s serene-looking Venus, but don’t be fooled by that smooth veil of hot sulfuric acid!
Couldn’t detect any cloud or surface features in this view. I’ll try without the IR-blocking filter next time.

Last but not least, here’s a close-up of our beautiful home, the one-and-only Earth
, featuring one of its most important inhabitants, my trusty astronomy partner, Apollo

We’ve had exceptionally mild & clear weather in Los Angeles this summer, & the planets showed up. I had a wonderful evening with the planets & I hope you find time to do the same. Saturn teams with Jupiter in the early evening & Mars dances with the Moon this week. Don’t miss it!
